Kane Parsons, the director of the horror film Backrooms, said he has held creative discussions with Valve while developing three projects he considers personal ambitions. The filmmaker described the conversations as exploratory and said no deal has been confirmed.

Parsons discussed the meetings during the Oct. 28 episode of The Kyle Buchanan Show. He said one of his three projects is a personal online production, while he kept the other details confidential. His comments followed a visit to Valve and earlier discussions with game director Hideo Kojima.

Parsons describes exploratory discussions

The filmmaker was asked about his dealings with Valve after previously expressing interest in creating a film adaptation of Portal. Parsons did not identify a specific game or adaptation as part of his current work. Instead, he characterized the conversations as a broad creative exchange about whether the companies could find a project they wanted to pursue.

“I don’t really have a desire to sensationalise anything that I may or may not be talking about over [at Valve]. Because it’s just mostly like, is it possible to make something compelling in some ways that we like? What do you guys even want to do? What do I want to do? Is there anything on the table in any way, shape, or form? If not, I would like to defend a future where they don’t even go down that road.”

Parsons said the discussion was not limited to one defined proposal. He described it as an abstract conversation that could develop in several directions, while noting that Valve was interested in experimenting internally. The director said that any concrete project would become known if something emerged from the talks.

Valve’s game worlds and film adaptations

Valve has built several properties with established identities outside its original releases, including Portal and Half-Life. Parsons’ earlier public interest in Portal, combined with his visit to Valve, has prompted speculation about a possible adaptation. His latest comments, however, establish only that discussions took place.

  • Parsons is developing three undisclosed projects.
  • One of those projects is described as a personal online production.
  • He said conversations with Valve were exploratory and that no adaptation has been confirmed.

Story Kitchen, the production company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, is separately working with Bloodious Games on a theatrical adaptation of MADiSON. That project illustrates the current interest in bringing game properties to film, but Parsons did not connect it to his discussions with Valve.
