Story Kitchen has agreed to develop a feature film set in the world of the first-person horror game MADiSON, Variety reported Monday. The Los Angeles–based production company signed a pact with developer Bloodious Games, the report said, and is targeting a theatrical release.

project details

Variety said the adaptation deal covers a feature film based on MADiSON, the 2022 psychological horror title that uses an instant camera as a core gameplay and puzzle device. The report added the project does not yet have a distribution partner.

  • Developer: Bloodious Games
  • Producer: Story Kitchen (Los Angeles)
  • Format: feature film, aimed at theatrical release
  • Distribution: not yet announced

The announcement highlighted the game’s reputation among horror players and critics. Bloody Disgusting selected MADiSON as one of its 10 Best Horror Games of 2022 for its atmosphere and use of the camera mechanic in both puzzle solving and supernatural encounters.

“MADiSON earned its reputation one heartbeat at a time. Players don’t just remember the story; they remember what it did to them,” Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri Johnson and Mike Goldberg said in a statement.

Alexis Di Stefano, creator and director of MADiSON, also commented on the collaboration, saying Story Kitchen understood the elements the studio wanted to carry into a film.

“We built MADiSON to be felt, not just played. Story Kitchen understood from the first conversation that the camera, the house, the Maxwell family, and the terrifying entities behind it all aren’t just set dressing; they’re the franchise. That’s who we wanted to build the next chapter with.” — Alexis Di Stefano

game background

MADiSON casts players as Luca, who awakens locked in a dark room with hands covered in blood after being abducted by someone possessed by the eponymous demon MADiSON. The game’s central mechanic has players use an instant camera to take and develop photographs to solve puzzles, explore environments and confront ghosts. Bloody Disgusting and other outlets praised the title for its psychological approach to horror when it arrived in 2022.

Story Kitchen is a production company that describes itself as specializing in game-to-movie adaptations; Variety identified the company as the lead developer on the MADiSON film project. Bloodious Games retains creative credit as the developer of the original game and is listed as a partner in the adaptation.

No casting, director, production timeline or release window was announced.
