Phantom Blade Zero has four optional Acolyte encounters tied to the Secrets at the Heart of the Lake side quest. Keengamer’s guide maps the fights across the Village of Lu, Pangzhen, Meigu Lake and Crimson Manor, while also explaining how their rewards open a separate area in the game.

Three Acolytes are reached through unusual scarecrows. Interacting with one sends Soul into a sealed arena for the corresponding boss fight. The fourth encounter is different: Hansui appears as part of a duo battle deep inside Crimson Manor. The scarecrows serve as map markers, but access to each encounter depends on story progress and the required tool or key item.

The quest begins when Soul picks up any of Firefly’s Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu. Keengamer recommends following the order in which the story makes the encounters available, with one important adjustment for Yanru. Her scarecrow appears early in the Village of Lu, but the Flameward that reduces the difficulty of her fire attack is found in Pangzhen. Returning after obtaining that item makes the fight easier to manage.

Where to find Yanru

Yanru’s scarecrow is in the northern farming fields of the Village of Lu, within the Terraces area before the Engine Giant Remains bell. It stands across from a training area occupied by shield puppets. Clear the puppets and interact with the scarecrow to begin the encounter.

Yanru uses fireballs and flaming clones to control the arena. Keengamer advises equipping the Flameward before activating the scarecrow and remaining mobile during the battle. Her reward is the Blazing Mask, one of the four elemental masks needed for the larger quest.

How the four masks unlock the next area

Each Acolyte drops an elemental mask. Once all four masks have been collected, they can be used at the Four Guardians’ Mirror in northwestern Meigu Lake. The mirror opens the Discordance realm, also called the Phantom Illusionist Ruins.

The newly accessible area contains a Long Pillar, two Sha-Chi Amber Fragments and the Whiteshadow weapon. It also contains the final step of Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. That makes the Acolyte encounters more than isolated optional fights: completing the set is the route to the mirror and the rewards beyond it.

Keengamer’s guide applies to the game version covered when it was published on Nov. 2, 2026. Players using a later version should verify that encounter requirements, item names and rewards have not changed before following the route.
