A Sensor Tower study prepared for GamesIndustry.biz shows a sharp increase in commercially successful indie releases over the past year. The number of indie games that sold at least 500,000 copies within their first 30 days rose from 13 in the earlier period to 33 in the later period, the report found.
What the study measured
Sensor Tower compared paid game sales across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox between two 12-month windows: Sept. 2024 through Aug. 2025 and Sept. 2025 through Aug. 2026. Projects that surpassed the milestone of 500,000 copies sold within 30 days of release were counted as “successful” for this analysis.
- The total number of games meeting that threshold rose from 55 to 76.
- Combined first-month sales for those games increased by 51%, reaching 182.4 million copies.
- Indie hits’ combined first-month sales climbed by 119% to 69.9 million copies.
Indie share and new franchises
The study reports that indie titles made up a larger portion of the sample of high-selling launches. Indie projects that met the 500,000-copy threshold rose from 13 to 33, lifting their share from 24% to 43% of the sample. Sensor Tower also noted growth in launch success for new franchises: the number of first games in new series that sold 500,000 or more in the first month rose from 21 to 40, representing 53% of the hits in the later period.
According to the figures cited, 35 high-performing projects were based on completely new intellectual property, and 27 of those new-IP hits were created by indie studios.
Genres and examples
Sensor Tower said that the increase in indie successes was not driven solely by cooperative “friendslop” titles; while that category grew from five to nine hits, the number of hits among other original indie projects rose from seven to 18. The study lists example games that crossed the threshold, including Meccha Chameleon, RV There Yet?, Escape from Duckov, Dispatch and Megabonk.
AAA context
Sensor Tower found that the AAA segment remained stable in count: 28 AAA releases surpassed the 500,000-first-month mark in the later period versus 27 in the earlier one. Combined first-month sales for those AAA launches increased by 38% to 87.8 million copies.
Sensor Tower emphasized that the rise in successful indie releases is occurring alongside continued commercial performance from AAA projects rather than at their expense. The full study and its underlying figures were prepared by Sensor Tower for GamesIndustry.biz.
