Capcom said Oct. 27 that it has taken online functionality for Street Fighter V offline and temporarily removed the game from digital storefronts while emergency maintenance is carried out to address security issues tied to the PHP programming language.
What Capcom announced
The publisher posted a notice on the Street Fighter series’ social media that content requiring online connectivity is currently unavailable for both the PlayStation 4 and Steam versions of Street Fighter V. Capcom said emergency maintenance is underway “to further strengthen security related to the PHP programming language” used by those builds.
“To further strengthen security related to the PHP programming language used in the PlayStation 4 and Steam versions of Street Fighter V, content requiring online functionality is currently unavailable. Offline content remains available and can still be enjoyed. Emergency maintenance is currently underway to address this issue. Until the fix has been completed, sales on the PlayStation Store and Steam will be suspended in stages.” — Street Fighter 6 (@StreetFighter), Oct. 27
Which features are affected
- Unavailable: online matchmaking services, including Capcom Fighters Network (CFN), Ranked Match, Casual Match and Battle Lounge.
- Available: offline modes such as Arcade Mode, Story Mode, Local Versus and Training Mode remain playable without network connectivity.
- Sales: Capcom said it will suspend sales on the PlayStation Store and Steam in stages until the fixes are complete; Capcom Town Store pauses sales of Steam product codes for the title.
Context and immediate steps
Capcom’s message linked the maintenance to security concerns in the PHP programming language. Over the past week a set of PHP vulnerabilities prompted a number of services and vendors to review and harden systems that rely on affected PHP versions. The company said it is carrying out emergency maintenance to strengthen those aspects of Street Fighter V and paused storefront sales to avoid customer inconvenience while online features are restricted.
Capcom did not provide a timeline for when online services or store listings will be restored. Players who already own Street Fighter V can continue to launch and play offline components of the game during the maintenance period.
