Final Fantasy Resonance reached a new Steam milestone over the weekend, hitting a peak of 42,885 concurrent players on PC, according to SteamDB. That figure makes Resonance the most‑played single‑player Final Fantasy release on Steam at launch, surpassing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which peaked at 40,564 concurrent players when it arrived on PC.

launch performance and community response

Square Enix’s HD‑2D role‑playing game has drawn sustained interest since its release, climbing through its first weekend to reach the reported peak. Steam user reviews have been strongly positive; Resonance holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, with the publisher reporting that 97 percent of more than 3,000 user reviews recommend the game.

  • Peak concurrent players: 42,885 on Steam, per SteamDB
  • Previous single‑player Steam peak for the series: 40,564 (Final Fantasy VII Rebirth)
  • Only Final Fantasy title with a larger Steam peak: Final Fantasy XIV at 95,150 concurrent players during the Endwalker expansion period

about the game and release

Final Fantasy Resonance is built in the HD‑2D style that Square Enix has used in recent projects to combine pixel‑art characters with detailed 3‑D environments and lighting. The game is developed by Square Enix with LANCARSE as part of Creative Studio 5 and is produced by Keisuke Nakashima, the company said. A free demo is available that carries over progress into the full release.

The publisher listed multiple platforms for Resonance: PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam and Xbox. The Steam peak reported by SteamDB applies only to the game’s PC performance on Valve’s platform.

series context

Final Fantasy XIV remains the franchise’s largest draw on Steam, with a concurrent peak of 95,150 players in December 2021 around the launch of the Endwalker expansion. Because Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online game, Square Enix’s new HD‑2D single‑player entry now sits atop the franchise’s single‑player Steam performance chart.

Square Enix said Resonance retells the opening story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile gacha title that shut down in 2025, and presents it in the HD‑2D presentation the publisher has used for other recent projects. The company credited LANCARSE and Keisuke Nakashima in production materials for the new release.

The SteamDB figures reflect concurrent players at peak and do not represent sales numbers. SteamDB is an independent third‑party tracker that reports concurrent player counts on Steam.
