Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will reprise their film roles as Bill and Ted in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure: Arcade, a new retro-style video game from Australian developer Art of Play Interactive.

The game is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Art of Play has not announced a release date, but the studio plans to offer the game digitally alongside a limited physical release, including an edition presented in packaging styled after the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

A 16-bit take on the time-traveling comedy

According to details reported by VGC, the project is structured primarily as a side-scrolling beat ’em up modeled on 16-bit arcade games. Players will control Bill and Ted as they travel through the historical setting established by the films, confronting historical figures and challenging them in mini-games.

The central objective involves gathering those figures and earning their respect before Bill and Ted deliver their on-stage history report. The game will support solo play and two-player cooperative play, allowing both characters to appear together during a co-op session.

  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC
  • Modes: Solo play and two-player co-op
  • Format: Digital release with a planned limited physical edition
  • Developer: Art of Play Interactive

Reeves and Winter played Bill and Ted in all three movies in the series. Their involvement gives the game the voices of the two characters at the center of the original 1989 film, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and its two follow-ups. Reeves has also taken other recent voice roles, including the voice of a samurai puppet in Hidari.

Art of Play plans a 2027 campaign

Art of Play Interactive said it will launch a Backerkit campaign in early 2027 to support the final stages of development. The campaign is expected to include digital and physical copies as well as merchandise and apparel tied to the game.

The studio also described a series of bonus items connected to the films' telephone booth. The planned rewards include a metallic card depicting Rufus, the character played by George Carlin, with additional Bill, Ted and historical-figure cards available through campaign participation and early backing.

“We are a strictly no generative AI studio across all our titles. This also extends to our trailer and supporting marketing materials.”

Art of Play's previous modern retro projects include Danger Mouse, Lady Death: Demonicron and The Phantom. The studio has positioned Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure: Arcade within that same retro-focused line of work while expanding into a property whose film cast remains attached to the game.
