Asus delivers preview of AMD FSR 4.1 to ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds to boost performance

Asus began rolling a preview GPU driver that adds AMD’s FSR Upscaling 4.1 to the ROG Xbox Ally X and Ally X20 on Oct. 23, with the original Ally model listed as coming soon and installation offered via Armoury Crate SE.

Asus began issuing a preview GPU driver that brings AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 to its ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20 handhelds, the company said, describing the update as a way to raise game performance on supported titles. Asus set Oct. 23 as the preview release date and listed the original ROG Xbox Ally as “coming soon” for driver support.

How to get the preview

Owners of Ally X or Ally X20 can install the preview through Armoury Crate SE. Asus said players should open the Update Center, choose Preview Updates and install the latest GPU driver. Once the preview period ends, the company said the driver will move to the Official Updates tab and install automatically.

“Preview updates may still contain bugs or instability,” Asus said, and asked users to report any problems so the final release can be refined.

What FSR 4.1 changes

AMD describes FSR Upscaling 4.1 as part of its Redstone suite and says the technology uses neural networks to transform lower-resolution frames into images that fit the display, aiming to increase frame rates while approaching or matching native quality. Asus said FSR 4.1 delivers a “substantial boost in game performance” but noted AMD has not published frame-rate figures; actual gains will vary by game and settings.

The new FSR model is substantially smaller than the original INT8 model and is tuned for the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, AMD said. That tuning is intended to improve efficiency on handhelds and mainstream laptops, according to the company announcement that named the ROG Xbox Ally X specifically.

User controls and caveats

  • Asus recommends installing the preview only through Armoury Crate SE's Preview Updates section and reporting issues encountered during the preview.
  • The original ROG Xbox Ally remains listed as awaiting its own compatible driver; Asus did not provide a timeline for that device.
  • AMD and Asus warned that availability and timing may differ by device and region.

Asus also outlined how players can enable FSR functionality in the device interface: add the FSR tile in the Command Center layout to toggle the feature. The company cautioned that preview software can contain bugs and asked testers to file reports so the final release can be polished.

The update positions the Ally line to take advantage of AMD’s latest upscaling approach while other handheld makers push competing hardware and software improvements. Asus and AMD did not attach specific frame-rate or visual-quality numbers to the preview release.
