The summer 2023 Pokémon TCG set Scarlet & Violet – Paldea Evolved continues to impress fans with its diverse collection of cards. While the focus is on the Paldean species, the Larvitar line also makes an appearance in this special set.
The Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon TCG began in March 2023, following the conclusion of the Sword & Shield series. This new era centers around the ninth generation of Pokémon games and introduces the new region of Paldea. The base set of Scarlet & Violet marked significant changes to the hobby, including silver borders on the cards, similar to the Japanese releases. Each pack also guarantees a holo-rare and two reverse holos.
A standout feature of this era is the lowercase ex mechanic, which showcases a double holographic pattern with a horizontal shine and a starry sparkle. Full Art ex cards now have a green, foil outline around the Pokémon. The Secret Rare section of expansions includes Full Arts, Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rare exs, Full Art Trainers, Special Illustration Rare Trainers, and Gold Hyper Rares.
Released on June 9th, 2023, Scarlet & Violet – Paldea Evolved is the second set of this era. It focuses on the Paldean Starters and the Treasures of Ruin Legendaries. The Larvitar line features prominently in this set, with illustrators Haru Akosaka, Shigenori Negishi, and hncl bringing their unique artistic styles to the cards.
The Larvitar card by Haru Akosaka depicts the Pokémon sitting on what appears to be a patch of grass in a cave. The level of detail in the background makes it difficult to discern the exact location. Shigenori Negishi’s Pupitar card follows a simplistic style reminiscent of the Diamond & Pearl era. Finally, the line culminates in a holographic Dark-type Tyranitar card, illustrated by hncl, showcasing the Pokémon roaring in the middle of a volcano.
