Microsoft Contemplates Expansion of Xbox Cloud Gaming to Include PC Games

Microsoft is reportedly considering expanding its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to include PC games, according to recent revelations. The current service is limited to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S titles, but internal emails from the FTC v. Microsoft case have shed light on the company’s intentions to leverage its Azure servers for streaming PC games.

In July 2021, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reached out to Xbox executives, expressing his assumption that the company would extend the Game Pass PC service. Phil Spencer, Kareem Choudhry, and Sarah Bond, among others, affirmed this notion. The goal is to utilize Azure servers and repurpose existing hardware to make streaming native PC games cost-effective.

Despite a slowdown in Xbox Cloud Gaming development, Microsoft has been actively pursuing strategic collaborations. A 10-year deal with British mobile network EE suggests that Xbox PC games may become available to EE customers. Moreover, the company’s testing of mouse and keyboard support for Xbox Cloud Gaming indicates further advancements in the pipeline.

In the competitive landscape, Microsoft remains vigilant. While Google’s Stadia faced challenges and ultimately shut down in January 2023, Microsoft sees NVIDIA’s GeForce Now as its primary competitor and closely monitors other players like Amazon’s Luna.

With the expansion of its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to include PC games, Microsoft aims to offer a comprehensive streaming platform that caters to a wider range of gaming enthusiasts. By capitalizing on its Azure servers and strategic collaborations, the company seeks to solidify its position in the growing cloud gaming market.
