A massive leak has exposed the unredacted details of Microsoft’s future plans for the Xbox console. The leak occurred as part of the ongoing Microsoft FTC case, with court documents being released without censorship. These documents include a slideshow that outlines Microsoft’s hardware roadmap for the Xbox until 2030, featuring new consoles and a dedicated cloud gaming device.
The leak reveals that a redesigned version of the Xbox Series X is in the works. This new version will have a cylindrical design and an updated controller. Another console, codenamed “Brooklyn,” will be an all-digital version with no disc drive, offering 2TB of storage. It will be sold at the same price as the current 1TB Series X, which is $499. The new controller for these consoles will also include gyro controls and a rounded design. Additionally, a refreshed version of the Xbox Series S with 1TB of storage and the Wi-Fi 6E feature is expected to be released in 2024.
Furthermore, the leaked documents mention the development of a brand-new Xbox console in 2028 that will utilize a “hybrid game platform” combining local gaming with cloud gaming. There is also reference to a dedicated cloud gaming device and “cloud-first” games. Although the design of the cloud gaming device appears to be a placeholder, it is mentioned alongside other Xbox gaming platforms such as handhelds, consoles, mobile devices, and TVs.
Notably, Microsoft had plans to release a device called “Keystone” in 2022, but it was ultimately canceled. Another interesting mention is a “direct-to-cloud controller,” which shares similarities with Google Stadia’s Wi-Fi-connected controller.
Unfortunately, the leaked documents do not provide specific information regarding the release date of the cloud gaming device or the controller. However, the mention of these devices on a slide discussing the 2025 fiscal year suggests that they are part of Microsoft’s long-term strategy.
