Atari 2600+ Returns: A Modern-Day Recreation of a Classic Console
Atari, the iconic gaming company known for its classic console, the Atari 2600, is making a comeback with the release of the Atari 2600+. This new version, created in collaboration with Plaion (formerly Koch Media), aims to faithfully recreate the beloved console of the 70s and 80s. The Atari 2600+ is set to launch on November 17th at a price of £99.99/€119.99/$129.99, making it more affordable than it was back in 1977.
While the updated console features modern additions such as HDMI output and USB power, its main appeal lies in its faithful adherence to the original Atari 2600’s design, complete with wood panel frontage. This nostalgic aesthetic is sure to entice those who remember the original console fondly.
Priced at £100, the Atari 2600+ comes bundled with a replica of Atari’s CX40+ joystick and ten games on a single cartridge. The included games are Adventure, Combat, Dodge 'Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, Realsports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball, and Yars’ Revenge. Additionally, single-game cartridges for Berzerk Enhanced Edition and Mr. Run and Jump will be available on launch day for £25 each.
For enthusiasts who enjoy classic paddle-controlled games, a bundle of two replica CX-30 Paddle Controllers priced at £30 will also be available. This bundle will include a 4-in-1 multi-game cartridge, although the specific contents have not been disclosed.
While this is not the first revival of the Atari 2600, with previous incarnations including a Lego replica, the Atari 2600+ aims to authentically capture the essence of the original console. It is a promising return for Atari, whose previous attempt with the Atari VCS fell short of expectations.
